Mix of the Week: Headhunter on Radio1

Category: , , , By brockolio

The mix of the week comes courtesy of Headhunter, in the mix on Mary Anne Hobbes' Radio 1 show, May 7th 2008.

Hailing from Bristol UK, Headhunter continues to push the limits of what the term 'dubstep' means. In the past two years, producers in the scene have begun the amalgamation of dubstep and minimal techno, pushing both genres into some uncharted and unfamiliar territory. At the head of this movement, Headhunter, along with Appleblim, Shackleton, and 2562, have helped to attract techno enthusiants to their sound, while also rejuvenating and reinventing dubstep as a whole. Perhaps one of the biggest testaments to this movement along with Ricardo Villalobos' remix of Shackleton's 'Blood On My Hands', is Headhunter's remix of Martin Buttrich's 'Well Done'. Synth arpeggios and forward balling low-end only a dubstep producer could muster bring a complete new life to the track. With another EP set to drop on Tempa shortly as well as an album also in the works, Headhunter is a name that we will all be hearing a lot more of.

The mix in question starts with Headhunter's own unreleased more upbeat and techno cuts, then pushing onward into some deep, dark, and dubby territory more familiar to the Tempa label, creating a wild ride full of nuances missed upon first listen. Featuring unreleased dubplates from the man himself, as well as tunes by 2562, Tes La Rok, and Martyn; this mix will be getting rinsed throughout the year.
