Headhunter: Nomad review

Tempa strikes again, this time with the debut LP release from producer Headhunter entitled 'Nomad'. Hailing from Bristol, Headhunter continues to push the limits of what the term 'dubstep' represents. In the past two years, producers in the scene have begun the amalgamation of dubstep and techno, pushing both genres into some uncharted and unfamiliar territory. At the head of this movement, Headhunter, along with Martyn, Appleblim, Shackleton, and 2562, have helped to attract techno enthusiasts to their sound, while also rejuvenating and reinventing the genre as a whole.
The aptly titled 'Nomad' is a tribute to the fact that each track on the album was recorded at a different location around the globe. The opening track 'Lifeform' sets the tone and mood for the album immediately, as it's breathing synthesizers and beating and pulsating drums evoke the imagery of an organic and evolving entity, within a dark and mechanical world. Another standout cut is 'Prototype' a track fit for a Hunter S. Thompson psychadelic fueled road-trip, complete with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas vocal samples overlaying it's mutating rhythm. 'Physics Impulse' is another tune that sets itself apart from most of the album. A more traditional sounding wobble-heavy dubstep tune at first, it then lends it's space into the psychadelic and fading synth-lines that patiently weave in and out of it's intricate drum patterns. 'Nomad' showcases Headhunter's techno influences and roots while still staying true to the rolling sub-bass core of dubstep. Fans of Peverelist and Appleblim should look no further than this album to add to the collection, although in a year with debut LP releases from the likes of Scuba, Ital Tek, and 2562; this one will perhaps be overlooked by some...Don't be one of 'em!
