Reconstrvct: phase 1 recap

On July 29th a new chapter of the dubstep story within NYC's ever-bustling bass music scene was ushered in via the inaugural Reconstrvct party at The Morgan in Bushwick, BK.  While the recent commercialization of "dubstep" has led to events now taking over some of the city's biggest concert venues, it has also lead to a growing desire for proper dubstep to return to the underground in an intimate setting where it belongs.  The aim of Reconstrvct is to shift the focus back to what the genre has always been about: sound and the "Low Frequency with Decency" mission statement is a testament to that.

One of the defining moments leading to the inception of the new event was this past June when Mala was once again slated to perform at Francois K's legendary Deep Space night at Cielo.  On a Monday night, Mala put on a 3-hour dubstep clinic to a completely rammed club and reminded many of us why we initially got involved with this genre and surrounding scene.  The monumental support for the event alluded to what this city has been sorely missing since the days of DubWar: a place to check your ego at the door, socialize with like-minded heads new and old, and to close your eyes and completely immerse yourself in deep sub-bass.

July's Reconstrvct pulled out all the stops, marking the U.S. debut of London-based Deep Medi producer VIVEK, as well as the first time that DubWar's Joe Nice and Dave Q headed up a bill together in NYC in over 8 months.  The night kicked off with an opening set from Nihal, an hourlong conceptual journey which he expanded upon in his recent Reconstrvction mix.  He was gracious enough to share the results of which on his Soundcloud below:

Reconstrvct resident Truenature then took to the stage, bringing the weighty 140bpm business and celebrating the catalogues of labels such as Black Box, Box Clever, DMZ, and Tempa.

Dave Q then did his thing, shaking up the tempos as always and keeping everyone on their toes.  You can still grab his Hotflush Podcast from earlier this Summer in case you missed it.  Dave will also be performing alongside Liondub as part of next week's Dub Invasions festival on September 12th at Kush.  RSVP for free admission.

"People do respond to that bottom frequency...People have to feel it."

VIVEK took to the stage for his headlining set that left anything that wasn't bolted down in the room vibrating from the immense sub-bass.  His set paid tribute to the extensive Deep Medi catalogue as well as including original productions from his 'Feel It' and 'Eyes Down' EP's released on the label earlier this year.

Joe Nice left no stone unturned in his first set in NYC since the DubWar one-off at Deity last Winter. His sets never disappoint and this performance in particular showed that he still had something to prove in the city where he truly cut his teeth as a DJ.  That hunger was channeled into another memorable set from Joe, even taking time out from his bag of dubs to pay homage to NYC with Alicia Keys "New York" (on vinyl of course).

Saturday night September 24th, Reconstrvct returns to the Morgan for another night of Low Frequency with Decency.  This month features a trio of NYC debuts with Tunnidge, Bunzer0 & Mr Jo, and C Dubs; as well as sets from Reconstrvct staples Truenature and Joe Nice.  10$ presales are now available through Resident Advisor HERE.

Keep an eye out for details concerning the Pre-contrvct party at the Morgan during the evening of the 24th featuring an art installation curated by Lifted Lab as well as live music leading up to doors opening at 10pm for Reconstrvct.
