Appleblim: Dubstep is a feeling

Words / Richard Carnes for ResidentAdvisor.net
Published / Fri, 18 Jul 2008

Richard Carnes catches up with Laurie ‘Appleblim’ Osborne in Bristol to talk about his roots, the impending death of Skull Disco, and what the future holds for him and his new label.

With their speaker-bothering basslines and rattling African percussion, the Skull Disco lads have made quite a name for themselves all over the globe. From their first release they’ve turned heads, with Appleblim’s heavy, metallic sound providing the perfect counterpoint for Shackleton’s more ethnic and polyrhythmic style.

Their popularity, especially in techno circles, has been helped greatly by none other than Ricardo Villalobos, who has championed their records and famously provided a remix of Shackleton’s ‘Blood On Our Hands’. “He did it for us for nothing’, Laurie informs us. “He just loved the music so much that he wanted to remix the record”. A weighty endorsement, indeed. But it’s not just Shackleton that's been getting his tracks remixed by techno heavyweights. Osborne’s ‘Vansan’ has been given the remix treatment by Chain Reaction legend Torsten Pröfrock (aka T++), and is due for release later in the year. Inquisitive ears can check it out on Appleblim’s April podcast for Rinse FM here.

Whilst Shackleton has stepped up a gear and started to play Ableton-aided live sets, Appleblim has kept his focus on DJing, showing his skills to full effect on last month’s Dubstep Allstars mix for the Tempa label. A total departure from the series’ previous instalments, Osborne finds time to showcase the deeper, more techno-influenced side of the genre, alongside proven dancefloor bombs such as the post-junglism of RSD’s ‘Pretty Bright Light’ and the menacing bass pressure of TRG’s ‘Decisions’. As last week’s RA podcast proves, the quality of the Tempa mix is definitely not a one-off.

2562: Dubstep in the area

Words / John Citizen for ResidentAdvisor.net
Published / Mon, 21 Jul 2008

Dubstep may still be a local thing, but it's no longer local to just one place. RA's John Citizen catches up with Dutch producer 2562 to talk scenes, sounds and area codes.

Owner of perhaps the most nondescript moniker in dubstep, Dave Huismans created a stir when his debut for Pinch's Tectonic Recordings first surfaced. 'Channel Two' marked the point at which an emergent sound became increasingly identifiable, a locus point for the growing cluster of producers smearing the edges between the formerly distinct realms of techno and dubstep. Nowadays, it's a full-blown movement, as artists like Peverlist, Martyn, Appleblim and Pinch have been putting out numerous releases in this fertile area between the two genres.

With a trademark percussive style which offsets precision beat edits with generous swathes of melody, 2562's own fusion of techno, garage, broken beat and dub has rapidly found favour across a wide spectrum of listeners. Performing under the dual aliases of 2562 and A Made Up Sound, Huismans now finds himself booked to play at events as varied as the influences from which he draws his inspiration. That trend is one that should continue with the recent release of his full-length debut, Aerial.

July 3, 2008
Words: Thomas Palermo for XLR8R.com

Bass Reaction’s theme this month: Enter the Technodrome. Lately, dubstep has been infiltrated by interesting IDM and dub techno elements. For evidence, check out completely superb new recordings by 2562 (Aerial, on Tectonic), Scuba (A Mutual Antipathy, on Hotflush), iTAL tEK (Cyclical, on Planet Mu). and Appleblim’s standout mix compilation for Tempa, Dubstep All-Stars Volume 6. All of the above mentioned titles excel and explore dubstep’s spatial possibilities, with clicks, pulsing melodies, and synthetic dreamscapes that drive the music. These albums are techy, dubby, refreshing.

Kode 9 and Hatcha are touring the U.S. in July. Dates include Tuesday, July 8 at Chop Suey in Seattle, Wednesday, July 9 Rotture in Portland, Thursday, July 10 at Mezzanine in San Francisco, Friday, July 11 at the Roxy in Los Angeles, and Friday, July 18 at Love in New York.

Hotflush Recordings has a big night called Sub:Stance happening July 11 in Berlin. The event takes place at one of the city's most renowned venues, Club Berghain, and features sets by Mala (Digital Mystikz), Shackleton, Appleblim, Distance, Scuba, and more.

BBC1 Radio’s Mary Anne Hobbs announced a special one-off radio broadcast called Generation Bass she’ll host August 18-19, featuring sets by new artists chosen by the original Dub Warz 7: Mala, Skream, Kode 9, Vex'd, Hatcha, Loefah, and Distance. The show will be recorded, filmed, and posted on YouTube. Hobbs recently compiled the diverse dubstep-to-techno Evangeline CD compilation.

Digital store and label Sonic Boom will air an exclusive video interview with Antisocial producer Silkie, available for viewing starting Monday, July 14.

Benga breaks down his production wizardry for Future Music in a scintillating video series! Essential viewing!

Matty G’s “West Coast Rocks – Glitch Mob Remix” is available as a free download. Nice one!

The ill Grime City collective is offering its third multi-DJ mix, featuring Cyan, Munk, SamSupa, 100 Spokes, Enzyme, and hosted by the brapped-up Emcee Child.

Big respect to Dusk & Blackdown who drop their debut album, Margins Music (Keysound), July 14. The heavy disc features established grime MCs Durrty Goodz, Trim, Farrah, Target, and more. A launch party takes place July 13 at FWD featuring Blackdown, Dusk, Oneman, and Joker. Blackdown’s blog and monthly Pitchfork columns are also essential reading!

Sub Swara’s Coup d’Yah (Low Motion Records) is 100% fire. No exaggeration. The 12-track album, available now as a MP3 download, features vocals from Zulu, MC Coppa, Napoleon Solo, and Juakali

Jackhammer dubstep producer Kevin Martin, a.k.a. The Bug, drops his Ninja Tune debut, London Zoo, on July 29. The album features Warrior Queen, Tippa Irie, Ricky Rankin, Flodan, and more. Watch the video for “Poison Dart,” featuring Warrior Queen.

A Bass Reaction underground hero is the mysterious Mr. Forensics, who’s pumping out the fresh DJ mixes (the Adventures In Death Star Valley series) and original plates with a quickness. His style is dark, fractured, and slightly IDM-influenced, but weighty nonetheless.

Fixations: Series One is the new compilation from Seattle‘s Insectmind that dropped April 20 and features new business from Hatcha, MKS, Struggle, and others.

Support BareFiles, the site for exclusive DJ mixes and new releases. New mixes and profiles are up now of Deapoh, Incyde, and Alien Pimp.

Producer Spotlight: 2562

Category: , By brockolio

2562 (pronounced twenty-five sixty-two) has been putting out some of the most interesting electronic music in the past year. His tracks bring a nice change of pace to the Dubstep scene, which can sometimes be criticized for having a very generic, overly droning sound for some. Hailing from the Hague, Netherlands, 2562 wields warm sub basslines, lush percussion, sounds reminiscent of Detroit techno, and a broken-beat influence to his style that helps set himself apart from many of his fellow producers.

His most recent release 'Techno Dread/Enforcers" is out now on Pinch's Bristol-based Tectonic label and is easily in the running for best 12" of 2008 thus far. Techno Dread relies on beautiful, reverb heavy synth lines over an up and down roller-coaster of bass and percussion. The track goes back and forth between a minimal tech and dubstep vibe, at times surging into some pretty serious 4x4 territory before returning back to beatless synth echoes that swing you into the second drop.

These two tracks will be featured on his LP 'Aerial' also releasing on Tectonic at the end of the month and is now available for preorder (2xLP or CD) through Boomkat.com

You can find his most recent mix for Surgeon's Electronic Explorations radio show here.
