We're starting you off this week with Silkie's latest mix, done for the Red Bull Music Academy who have been seriously on point with their commissioned lecture and mixtape series in showcasing the sounds of the dubstep movement. Silkie will be releasing his debut LP 'City Limits' this Summer on Mala's Deep Medi label and it's probably the most anticipated release in the genre at the moment. With a recent guestmix on MAH as well as having a few tunes played out on the most recent Dusk & Blackdown podcast previewing the album, word is out that 2009 = Anti-Social's year. This mix, along with most of the tracks on the forthcoming album are a staggering response to everyone who has credited dubstep as soulless music devoid of human emotion. This one is for you, haters.

Next, Plastician's barn-burner of a set on Rinse.fm from May 18th caning some absolutely huge tunes all the way throughout. This show was also the debut of some of the rap/dubstep collaborations in the works for Plasticians's mixtape releasing this June with vocals from Murs, Grouch & Eligh, JimmyJams, Xzibit, Snoop Dogg, & more. Personal favorite of the collaborations so far is Murs flowing over Chase & Status' absolutely evil-carnie ride cut 'Madhouse.' 'I got that Dylan' is also pure jokes. The 3-deck blend is blissful. Respect to Plastic for doing it big since day dot. Other highlights include 12th Planet- Be Blatant [forthcoming on Smog soon b/w '68'], the OM Unit tunes, as well as new bits from Gemmy as well.

DJ Zhao: Fusion Part 1

Category: , , , , , By Anonymous

Showcasing one of the most original mixes of the year, DJ Zhao fuses the sounds of raw afro and asian traditional music with modern bass driven beats from the dubstep and grime scene. Original productions compiled by the Ngoma Soundsystem (Ngoma is Swahili meaning drums, dance, and song) for Germany's Fusion Festival earlier this summer 2008.

"if you've ever wondered what Digital Gamelan is like, what happens when Capetown Gospel singers relocate to London ghettos, or how Robots would play Ethiopian Jazz..."
....then give this mix an ear.

The Month In Grime/Dubstep... [October ]

Category: , , , , By brockolio

The Month In: Grime / Dubstep
The Month In by Martin Clark
for Pitchfork

Meet Zomby, last seen exploring the badland territories beyond grime, dubstep, garage, rave, dubstep, bassline, or kuduro. He describes his M.O. as like a confused pirate on a sonic treasure hunt, who "only has half the map" but keeps "finding 'X's." On this year's output, he's going to be one infamous pirate. Whether he's fallen off the edge of the flat earth is entirely another matter.

Zomby first appeared on dubstep's radar in 2005 with ragga bouncer "Spliff Dub", though in fairness he'd been raving and DJing for many years before. Also from that era, "Memories" evoked imagery of raves long since gone, yet it was the 12"s on Hyperdub and Ramp in 2008 that signalled he'd found a few "X's" and located himself somewhere fresh and new. Download his mix for Radio 1 HERE.

Take for example his explanation of how he built recent track "Aquafre5h": It gives you a glimpse into his mindstate and the sounds he's chasing. "I sampled some Pharrell bits'n'bobs and a Mario NES game I sampled and processed so all elements of the song are correct...I've been working with a custom palette of sound for a while now. I suppose these songs are the result of that and great skunk."

However it was created, Zomby's music has found fans in many of the current sonic pioneers of new directions, like Jamie Vex'd, Starkey, Darkstar, and even Burial. Yet Zomby's sound is most impressive when its effect on regular listeners is observed. While other producers can generate impact or momentum, Zomby dubs tend to induce a unique mix of shock or confusion; a stunned sense of "what the…?" Recent beats "Gloop", "Parrot Stew", and "Aquafre5h" feature mutating bottom ends, unstable and chaotic bass bubbles that seem to emit gasses like some primordial soup. And while Zomby's sound regularly travels into other moods, these mutating aquabass tracks are by themselves alone good enough to warrant acclaim.

"Garage is my wife. I cheated on her a couple of times but wholly regret it," he explains in interview. "Darker garage was more the sound I was planning to work with but grime was also a massive part of the jigsaw for me. Eski and dubstep really went hand in hand for me. I didn't see any difference in the style only the sounds used so I got really interested in transposing styles. Like negative imprints of other peoples beats that would be called on genre or style and then having sounds transposed would lift it into another…"

Other massive influences on the Zomby sound are rave, hip hop/crunk, house and kuduro and in this he's found kinship with acts like Darkstar, Rustie or Joker. But despite moving in similar orbits, Zomby still remains alone, isolated on his own trajectory, spending nights in on the 'net consuming music old and new on YouTube, mentally recyling it through a skunk filter and rebuilding it, wrongly but oh so right.

"It's not so much a new direction," he says of his sound, "it's just about writing real songs or tracks that are justified in more than one sense. Nothing novelty or formed for its own sake is really doing it anymore. Every element has to be looked at and analyzed and really it's a state of minimizing to move forward, when you've worked out how to refine what you do you can turn the taps on as such. I think that's what's started to come through now."

In interview, Zomby bares more than a few traits in common with Burial. Both are fiercely passionate about their own music, hark back to the spirit of rave for inspiration and produce fragile, unpolished but startlingly original music. It's little surprise then that Zomby declares himself Burial's number one fan, while his new side project, a throwback-to-'91 rave album on Werk is sure to appeal to fans of Burial's influences.

Judging by interviews, so much of Burial's inspiration is the bittersweet memories of raves now long since extinct, and as Zomby expounds his passion for the era, all his influences-- hip-hop, garage, dubstep, jungle, rave, kuduro, grime-- seem to coalesce into one coherent whole, now facilitated by the vast visibility of music on the 'net and bathed in the fading afterglow of hardcore. Perhaps every "what-the?" moment he creates in new listeners' brains is just a by-product of his own urge to forever re-create that first rave-rush again in his own.

"I get those rushes now man," he explains. "The songs I like make my hairs stand on end. That's when I know the song is a winner. For me there's not gonna be enough time in my life to devour all the music I want so the real rush I'm searching for I'm probably never gonna find. Eskimo was a rush. Crunk's been a bit of a rush. For me its forward ahead at full speed really. I'm not looking to bring something back. It's more just my vibe I carry through the music. It's the vibe that's gone now. It's totally gone now but I remember it. That's the thing that inspires me. I write from that place."

Out of the glare of critical hype, grime continues to flourish. If the mixtape era allowed MCs to grow as artists and build independent fanbases away from the demands and constraints of major label deals, 2008 is the year grime began to return to the mass market spotlight and hence to the majors, yet on its own terms. Long after it was critically written off, perhaps grime is becoming it's own form of British urban pop. There are signs of activity and organization amongst A-list MCs, most of whom were on stage with Kano at the O2's Indigo club last week.

The main message that the Indigo gig gave out is that grime acts, even self-funded or independently signed ones, can fill major venues. Kano's return from his major-funded deal has seen a flourish of energy by the MC, making himself massively visible both in the grime scene and on social media sites. Independent and using MySpace, Blogger, YouTube, Facebook and Bebo to great effect, not to mention conventional radio, he appears twice as visible to grime fans than when he was backed by a massive label. Musically it's the same old Kano flow, just minus the commercial touches big labels require, like Craig David duets.

The guests he did choose to share the stage with speak volumes about both his album 140 Grime Street and where Kano really is at musically. Skepta, someone who needs no introduction in the DIY-street hype-self-funded stakes, came blazing on stage in a white silk dressing gown. If not pantomime, it was certainly pure energy. And he got Wiley to turn up.

Yet few bars got more crowd response than Ghetto's. Word is he has a few album deals on the table, as you might expect from a man who's made not just the year's hottest tune, "Sing for Me", but the now obligatory, chart-friendly electro version, which he performed at Indigo too. Check the video with its entertaining visual twist. Ghetts also features on Wretch 32's forthcoming single "Ina De Ghetto", mentioned last month but increasing in hype as the year goes on. Add in Wiley's warm but powerful "Where's My Brother" and the momentum for grime keeps building. Durrty Goodz is quietly building a massive fresh catalogue to unleash. JME tours this month-- something fairly unheard of in grime-- playing the rock venue the Scala this Friday. Chipmunk, one of the few youngers to really get his professional game going up and beyond the core grime scene, has come in strong with his new single "Beast" which sounds like it could cross over, despite or in fact probably thanks also to the terrible guitar solo/cackling breakdown at the end.

Grime remains most vital, most exciting when it's dark, complex and raw, so tracks like Trim's "Pram" and DVA's "Bullet A Go Fly [ft. Badness, Riko, Flowdan and Killa P]" would still shine in any month. Equally exiting underground sounds are Jammer's "Leave Me Alone" and P Money's new mixtape. But it's also great to see grime acts breaking through the music industry's glass ceiling, getting organized, working with, not against, the business' machinery so it can bring its music through on it's own terms. Speaking on Logan's show, Roll Deep described how they seem to be allowed to play venues in London again, something the authorities have quietly blocked for them in the past and other acts. Target described the music industry's attitude to them as "wary" and how they were having to "break stereotypes" to promote their new (independently funded) album. This seems all the more crazy if you think it was over five years ago that ex-Roll Deep member Dizzee won the Mercury Prize. Like Dylan Mills, Roll Deep have had to soften their sound to find commercial appeal, but at least their voice is beginning to be heard beyond the confines of their own community. After all why have Addicted to Bass when you can have Goldie's "Timeless"?

Dusk + Blackdown's debut album "Margins Music" is out now. Download their new October Rinse mix here.
