Fabric 50: Martyn review

Category: , By brockolio

London's Fabric nightclub is no stranger to the backyard grown underground sounds of the dubstep movement.  With dubstep acts now touting Room1 billings and after the success of Rusko & Caspa's Fabriclive disc from late 2007 as well as the introduction of the new Elevator Music CD series, the club decided to call upon Dutch producer Martyn for their fiftieth Fabric mix CD installment.

Martyn's music has always been impossible to pigeonhole.  Seamlessly weaving together the sounds of dub, Detroit techno, funky, wonky, and influences from all over the world into what can be aptly described as 'martynmusic'.  As people continue to seek out definitions and genre labels for what exactly it is they're listening to, Martyn continues to stay one step ahead of their ability to lump his music into a pre-existing category.

If the tracklist alone is any indication, 2010 is going to be an incredibly exciting year for music. It serves as a look into the future at the endless possibilities that can exist when producers continue to push the boundaries and break through the constraints of genre definitions.

Fabric50 has a little something for everyone without being eclectic solely for the sake of being eclectic.  Right from the very start it catches your attention with the sounds of Hudson Mohawke's 'Joy Fantastic' a tune that could have come straight off an Outkast album from the year 3000.  Throughout the mix you'll find hypnotically percussive Funky House from Uncle Bakongo and Roska; some club Autonomic vibes from D-Bridge, Hyperdubbin' lovin' from Kode9 and Cooly G, with little hints of Zomby sprinkled here and there for good measure.  Standout tracks include Kode9's 'Oozi' continuing in the vein of his last 12" on Hyperdub 'Black Sun/2 Far Gone', Ben Klock's outstanding remix of the Martyn & Spaceape collab 'Is This Insanity?' and the enchanting illusory sounds of 'Lost on Tenori Street' by Maddslinky (Zed Bias).

As amazing as the track selection is, these tunes would feel disjointed were it not for the execution of Martyn's mixing.  Shifting genres and BPMs live in the mix, it retains an organic and human element as opposed to something artificially cooked up and excessively tweaked in a computer program.  Fabric50 throws as much new music at you as possible without ever losing the standard cohesion found in all of Martyn's mixes.  Be sure to grab this one when it drops in all of the usual outlets January 11th.

“I did the whole mix CD live just because I thought that was more honest than doing an Ableton DJ mix. It is how I would play live - not everything on the CD is perfect, but it’s not meant to be. That goes for my DJ sets and for my music as well; there’s always little bits and pieces that could have been much better or more streamlined or whatever, but that’s the beauty of music to me. I wanted it to be raw and honest. As for the selection, I just wanted to try and make it as varied as possible and get people from all different corners of the globe together on one CD. The idea of it was to bring together all these sounds and vibes, something I would never be able to do on a studio album, just because I’m not able to make all that sort of music. It's amazing music though, I love it, so I want to play it to people."

Martyn & TRG mixes on Rob Da Bank

Category: , , By brockolio

Rob Da Bank & Friends show from last week showcasing two hour-long mixes from Martyn & TRG. Martyn's mix is seriously on point and almost completely impossible to define and pinpoint, weaving together Funky, Techno, Dubstep, and even some DnB to create one solid foundation of sound. If you haven't grabbed his new full-length album Great Lengths yet, you need to get on that! Order through Boomkat or go out and support your local record shops! Martyn will also be perfoming this summer at the Camp Bisco festival alongside Starkey, Joe Nice, Flying Lotus, Nas, & more. Don't miss out!

TRG's mix is money as well, starting off with a deep Clubroot track (out to the LoDubs famo!) and also featuring some Joker & Ginz and TRG's huge remix of Deekline & Wizard. 909 Trek is also a next level tune. Out to TRG doing it big and repping Romania.

"Glasgow's Numbers crew hosted the Jak:Bloc room at the BLOC Weekend festival a couple weeks ago. Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Jackmaster and myself had a great time in there, and apart from dealing with a few technical difficulties I've collected a few great campfire stories to tell friends!

In the middle of my set, the bar personnel on the other side of the room accidentally started their CD player, so while I was in the mix I suddenly heard Simply Red's "Fairground" blaring through the speakers! A 20 minute snippet of this set was broadcast on BBC Radio 1's Leftfield show hosted by Rob Da Bank. However, something went wrong in converting the sound files though, so what was played on the show was at the wrong speed!!! (the whole set was at least 10-15 bpm too slow) I decided to put the correct version online for all of you to listen to (and left the Simply Red bit in there all the way at the end)."

Martyn 3 Bar Fire interview

Category: , , , By brockolio

Words by Mark Gurney [Markle] for 3 Bar Fire.

"If you’ve been following the creative path of dubstep over the past two years, you’ll know there has been some seismic cross pollination of musical genres which have all fed and bled into each other like an osmotic dub membrane. The Dutch born, USA dwelling Martyn, a 33-year-old producer and DJ, has been very much at the forefront of this exchange, helping redraw definite lines between the houses of techno, 2 step, jazz and dubstep.

However, it was a stellar remix of TRG’s Broken Heart on Hessle Audio, championed by scene pioneer Kode9, which has helped propelled Martyn into the next dimension. Over the course of three internet conversations with plenty of food, ironing and sleeping stoppages, Mark Gurney managed to quiz the Dutch dynamo about his new single, forthcoming material on his 3024 label and working at 140bpms, but just don’t ask him about pigeon holes!"

Words / Dave Rinehart

the following is only an excerpt. the full text can be found HERE

Interrogating Martyn

Does Martyn play drum n bass? Techno? House? Dubstep? Or all of the above? Dave Rinehart investigates.

Hard one to pigeonhole, Martyn. When the Dutch producer plays at RA’s off-Sonar event in Barcelona this weekend, it'll be alongside techno acts such as Daniel Bell and Conforce. Last month at MUTEK he shared a bill with hip-hopper Flying Lotus and dubstepper Kode9. His last gig at Fabric was opening François K dub-centric Deep Space night.

"I've always collected all different styles of music, and I just love to play different styles of music out as well,” explains Martyn. "I always carry lots of dubstep, lots of house, even some hip-hop, some soundscapes, just anything really.”

That’s not to say that Martyn is one of those dreaded “eclectic” DJs who is all about mashing up the unexpected; it’s just that Martyn happens to make music at the nexus of different genres. For the past year or so, dubstep and techno have been eyeing each other from across the room, and Martyn’s bass-heavy, melancholy-tinged tunes such as 'Broken' and 'Twenty Four' have been among the first to consummate the relationship.

A DJ for a dozen years or more, Martyn’s first love was not dub and dubstep but rather drum n bass—his first records arrived on Marcus Intalex’s label Revolve:r in 2005. Lately he has started his own label, 3024, and released records on Appleblim’s new imprint Apple Pips. Future plans? Well, aside from getting married and moving to America, he’s intent on making a debut album, not to mention DJing every weekend. But since he carts round such a wide range of records to a wide range of gigs, surely he takes requests? "Well,” says Martyn. “My favorite gigs are the ones where they tell me, 'We just want Martyn. We don't care what you play, just do what you want to do."

MARTYN NEWS:

"Hi,

Two more recent remixes i've done are now available on Beatport, namely TRG's Broken Heart remix and Black Pocket (aka Steve Spacek) "Ure a Star" remix on Fat City Records (exclusive!). Click on my beatport player to get to them.

On a vinyl note, the Black Pocket remix should be out soon with a wicked remix by Harmonic 313 on the flip of Guilty Simpson's "For the D". Another remix "Epileptic" for Shut Up and Dance will drop this week, and my 3024-002 "Natural Selection / Vancouver" is out on july 7th! Revolve:r 012 with "After Seven" / "JW on a good night" and "Storm Watch" will be on the shelves end of july...

What will the future bring ??

- Just wrapped up 3024-003 to come out just after the summer. It will contain two wicked remixes by wicked artists!
- A couple more remixes coming, one of them is "Roberta Flack" by Flying Lotus on Warp.
- As I stated in an interview with ResidentAdvisor.net, I've started work on my first album.

comments always welcome!
stay strong all of you..

Martyn is finding his way into mixes more and more often as the broken-beat techno movement in the dubstep sound begins to take shape and continue to push the boundaries of the genre's ambiguous title. His latest 12" release, "All I Have is Memories / Suburbia", on Appleblim's new label Applepips continues to show how versatile the sounds of dubstep can be. "Memories" has a humming bassline that albeit subtle in the mix, really helps carry the tunes lighter elements throughout. The occasional but impeccably placed wispy and ethereal vocal samples and an off-kilter but driving drum beat round out a solid A-side. "Suburbia" is the standout track on this release, though. The tone is set within the first 10 seconds when the initial saturated and warped organ makes its first appearance and immediately captures you, reminiscent of some of 2562's production. Buiding on that rhythm "Suburbia" begins to progress as different elements, drum clicks, and various bleeps and bass are allowed to weave in and out and find their own place throughout the course of the tune.
