on the sly

This Thursday night On the Sly returns to the Gallery @ LPR to celebrate the release of Sleepyhead's 'Motions EP' out on Trouble & Bass at the end of the month.  Astronautibros Kuhn & The Range support, alongside Looney down from Albany and as always, NY State nomad and OtS resident Knomad.

We're also excited to announce a special pre-game collaboration for friends of OtS...

We will be hosting a "taco happy hour" over at Oaxaca Taqueria on 16 Extra Place (near Bowery & Bleecker) from 8p - 10p the night of the show serving up $2 tacos and free brews until we're dry.  Come meet the artists and fam, get some cheap eats, put back a few beers and then head over to The Gallery with us.  All you gotta do to partake in the cheapness is mention "on the sly" at the register.

knomad will be around handing out the beers and saying hey to anyone who makes the journey.

Sleepyhead's EP doesn't drop until the 31st, but you can preview clips on the JunoDownload player below.  Also be sure to grab his Freshmore podcast from last year HERE.

"Brooklyn based bohemian 26 year old Samuel Pohner aka Sleepyhead delivers this strikingly moody and laid back 4 song EP simply titled Motions. Just off a tour a with fellow collaborator Mimosa and like-minded producer Kastle, Sleepyhead starts off the new-year right with this amazing EP. Motions is Sleepyhead's second official release, (first was out on Party Guy Records), so let us introduce you; Sleepyhead started producing music in 2006 when he began working on mostly dubstep and bass music while he was living in San Francisco, CA. SF is also where he started his side project with Mimosa called Sexytime, which you can tell from the name are mostly sultry and floating in the clouds vibed-out tunes. In 2009 Sleepyhead steared away from dubstep and began focusing on the sounds of house, 2 Step and Juke, which brings us to the present. Along side this release in 2012, Sleepyhead has a forthcoming release on our Atlanta home boy's Distal and Mite's label Embassy Records.

Trouble & Bass definitely goes deep on this EP as Sleepyhead delicately interweaves gorgeous melodies while creating layers of space and time using his tools at hand; rolling snares, big kicks, percolating toms, uplifting pads, warm synths, reverbed out vocals, and snips and snaps that all come together to create a feeling of heavy nostalgia that leave you unexpectedly comfortable and almost high. From underwater sounds to club kicks and garage shuffles, you're gonna wish you were listening to this EP up in the clouds or on a deserted island beach."

After some untimely technicals last month, we're bringing back Kuhn to showcase why he's on track to be one of 2012's breakout artists.  Keep it close to RBMAstudios as they will be running a feature on the Brooklyn-based producer later this month.  For now, enjoy the sounds of his Hyponik mix:

In keeping with our close Astro Nautico ties, we've also slated The Range to perform this month, fresh off the release of his 8-track release 'The Big Dip' on the netlabel in December.

"The Range is James Hinton, a 23-year-old producer from Providence, RI with a facility for melding frenzied footwork percussion and melodic R'n'B vocal cut-ups to generate rich, emotional bass music for the bedroom and the club.

The Big Dip is a thunderous album. On tracks like 'Distractions' and 'Blind Spot,' sub kicks flip effortlessly between ice cold crunk and scorching footwork riddims, with buzzing snare rushes, cowbells, glass hits, rimshots, toms, timbales, and a slew of hand claps up top. The result is the orchestration of a totally percussive sound as baroque as it is sparing, precise, clinical.

Previous to The Big Dip, Hinton released under his alias stegosaurus a full-length entitled 'cower' on his own imprint Sqwal Recordings. More recently and as The Range he remixed the title track of Kuhn's Slime Beach EP for Civil Music and howse's 'bangsless' for Astro Nautico."
