Our latest cloudcast comes from 23-year old producer James Hinton aka The Range, out of Providence, Rhode Island.  His knack for lush chopped and de-tuned RnB vocal samples anchored by footwork percussion earned him high accolades on his album 'The Big Dip' released on Astro Nautico this past December.  In the case that it may have eluded you, you can still stream and support the release HERE on the Astro Nautico bandcamp page.

Earlier this month The Range joined fellow astronautibro Kuhn to both throw down sets at OnTheSly at The Gallery @ LPR.  We recorded the sets from the night and James was gracious enough to let us share it with all you beautiful people.  You can also currently DL his remix of Timewharp- yrLyf for free over on his soundcloud.

For those who haven't yet made it out to OnTheSly, our next party will be February 16th with extended sets from NJ's DJ SLiiNK, Turrbotax resident Contakt, and our boy knomad.  As always there's #NOCOVER and #NOEXCUSES.  Come out and support!!  We're also happy to announce our continued partnership with Oaxaca Taqueria (16 Extra Pl. off Bowery) where we'll be hosting a taco happy hour from 8-10pm before the show with 2$ tacos and free beers until they're gone.  Hope to see some of you there and continuing to grow the family.

In advance of his set at the LoDubs Showcase at dBFestival next week, Monkeytek was kind enough to pass us along a recently recorded live set of his.  Here's a live recording of Monkeytek & MC Jagga Culture live at the 3rd installment of the Version party in Portland, OR on July 24th, 2010. The party also featured a headlining set from Dub music pioneer and master at the controls, Scientist as well as Alter Echo.  News surfaced today of a Dubstep vs. Scientist LP on Tectonic and apparently Scientist dubbing tunes from Mala and King Midas Sound.  Will be sure to keep you posted when more details become available.  Big up @laurent_fintoni for the heads up.

Monkeytek, along with Ryan Organ hold it down as the resident DJs and curators of Portland's monthly Various party, which has been bringing in acts like Kode9 & Spaceape, XI, DJG, and Daega Sound to the city since 2006. We had a chance to attend in March of '09 and if you ever make it out there, be sure you try to reach. The venue, vibe, and H.A.S. sound are all top notch. Their next party is October 2nd when Toronto's XI will be rolling through to PDX and as always, more information on the Portland scene can be found at pdxindub.com.  Decibel attendees can also get a chance to see XI when he plays the DECIBEL X FRESH latenight on the 24th along with Dibia$e, Devon(who), and Tastemaker at the Monkey Loft going til the early AM.

This set was recorded live at Mutek_10: Brooklyn Preview at Studio B on April 11, 2009. Pangaea is part of the Hessle Audio crew, who continue to push forward their unique brand of deep and soulful dubstep to the masses. This set had the very techno-centric Beyond crowd losing their shit on the dancefloor, pitch-bent winding synth stabs, hypnotizing tribal drum beats and percussion, funky melodies...this one's got it all. Gemmy with a live mix from a party put together by Crewstace May 1st in Belgium alongside Phonetics and Bunzer0. If you've been around this blog enough, you know that we still can't get enough of what kid is doing right now. Probably one of the most anticipated albums of the year for us here at JenkyHQ is going to be his full-length debut album which will be releasing on Planet Mu this August. Mix is large, highlights are Gemmy tunes 'Kodama', 'Supligen', and 'BT Tower', hearing 'Next Hype' mixed into 'Do It', the 'Rise-Up' Bristol rmx, Coki's 'Burnin' sneaking in near the end as well as some RnB and Reggae vibes tastefully scattered throughout. You can grab Gemmy's 1st release on the Mu label 'Supligen'/ 'BT Tower' (ZIQ229), a pre-cursor to the album avalable NOW through Boomkat and most other online outlets.

Get slimey! Night Slug Alex Bok-Bok with a March mix for the heads over at Discobelle. Here's what he had to say about his mix, "“For my installment of Mixing It Up, I wanted to give you guys a taste of where the Night Slugs sound is at right now. 2009 has been amazing so far, people are more open-minded than ever, sets are diverse and suddenly it feels like anything is possible.

As a DJ my aim is to gather tracks from a wide range of sources, scenes and styles and make them all work together in a riddim-y, dutty uk soundsystem / pirate conext. I’m originally a grime head, but the emergence of the UK Funky scene has got me looking for that raw percussive momentum and bass energy in all sorts of strange places.

To guarantee that rolling pirate style, this mix was recorded live on the decks (as I’m sure you’ll hear!). I recommend listening on a night drive / while cycling, or running, preferably at night, and if you’re listening at home turn up your sub!”

1. Riva Starr - War Drums

An out-of-character tune for Riva Starr, all minimal nail-biting toms, this is the perfect ‘oh no it’s gon happen! ‘ intro.

2. Karizma - Outta Control

UK Funky hits like Donaeo’s Party Hard have got us drawing for the Defected and Strictly Rhythm back catalogs, and digging up things like this haunted riddim by Karizma. I love the brass section!

3. Essy & Vibes - Dream On

Tunes like this are the reason I like to call the new UK House movement ‘Grime in Disguise’. Tropical bass!

4. Perason Sound - Wad

This was made by a certain house and techno-infused producer of twisted dubstep - guess who. Banging broken, twitchy house with a big gutter sub. I can’t stop playing this one at the moment.

5. Martin Kemp - No Charisma

I’m sort of responsible for the title of this track - it’s a funny-ish story that I won’t tell here. This twilight riddim with the heavy kwaito pitchbending synth line was produced by Martin Kemp, the brother of badderman DJ Brackles, and is forthcoming on the later’s label.

6. Gregor Salto - Just For Fun (Bok Bok’s edit ft. Hawatha

The vocal on this track comes from Hawatha, a Texas rapper that my friend Prince William is working with at Krispee Ones studios. Out to the TX connection.

7. L-Vis 1990 - Run

This L-Vis dubplate is a current personal favourite of mine. He makes it seem so easy!

8. Emvee - Glitch Dub

The drop on this tune is devastating! UK house at it’s most cantankerous.

9. Wizzbit - Jam Nite

Wizzbit is the alias of garage>grime>funky godfather Geeneus. He’s worked a lot of styles over the years but despite Jam Nite dating back to 2003 the insane bruckout drums and the huge bassline in this tune sound more relevant than ever. Definitely one of my favourite grime classics.

10. Karizma - Darqness

Something that mutated out of working with L-Vis on our Bongo Jam refix. Ram, because originally there was a typo in our refix that read “Bongo Ram”. Say what you mean eh?

Kingdom is absolutely unique and one of my favourite producers. He blends the aesthetics of UK garage with classic rave, hardcore, jumpstyle, - even trance, with a heavy dose of the drama and emotion of classic Chicago house. His new material is on fire!

Here's another big set from the soundsystem known as Mungo's HiFi out of Glasgow, UK. This set was recorded live at this year's Shambala festival in the UK at their performance in the Roots tent. Expect to hear a lot more reggae and roots than their recent dubstep material, irie riddims abound.
