fabric presents Elevator Music: Vol. 1 from Fabric London on Vimeo.

Minimix by mlr // Art by Remote Location // Animation by Peter Dickinson

Gaining both critical acclaim for its catchiness as much for its atmosphere, the mutant strain of 140 bpm (or thereabouts) bass music currently infiltrating the global airwaves has morphed consistently over its recent life span; cross pollinating its acres of influences into the bundles of sub genres it now houses. It's become a strain of club music that revels in biting back against the perceptions of those outside of the core scene, those who consider dubstep to simply be a swelteringly tough warbling bassline that's complimented by a half step drum pattern and some airy atmospherics.

The warm fluid basslines of dark garage, the spacious precision of techno, the unabashed bolshiness of grime; the percussion led rhythm of funky house, the wanton bump of 2-step and the erratic fluorescent synthesized harmony of skweee are all constantly being harvested, peeled and juiced by a new wave of producers who are revelling in their mission to further the cocktail of sound that dubstep is currently thriving off.

Positioned as it is, in the midst of the UK capital, fabric has seen a torrent of vivacious ingenuity pass through its brickwork over its 10 year life, but of late, there has been an invasion (as much in the offices as on the club's dancefloors) of impeccably sculpted dubstep. The 'Elevator Music' project stands as an album in its own right, becoming more than just a collection of tracks. It's a collation of all the variant strains of dubstep; a completely original and exclusive collection of future bumps that reflects the embracive nature of fabric's dance floor music policy.

Pooling tracks from established producers like Martyn, Starkey, Untold and Caspa & Rusko with a smattering of producers destined for great things come 2010, Elevator Music ticks boxes in categories and niches that don't even fully exist yet; unifying the vision of 16 producers with one simple passion. Bass.

If you pre-order 'Elevator Music' on CD before 6pm on January 8th, you will automatically receive free entry to the launch party at FabricLive. Taking place on Friday, January 8th, 'Elevator Music' will take over Room 3 with Untold, Shortstuff, Hot City, xxxy, Mosca and Vista, whilst Rooms 1 & 2 will feature the likes of Todd Edwards, Hudson Mohawke (Live), Rustie (Live), 2562, Headhunter, dBridge, Instra:mental, Joy Orbison and more!

FABRICLIVE 50:
D-BRIDGE & INSTRA:MENTAL PRESENT AUTONOMIC

ARTIST: VARIOUS
LABEL: FABRIC RECORDS
UK/R.O.W. 15th FEBRUARY 2010
USA RELEASE: 23rd MARCH 2010

Despite the genre’s future-forward and experimental beginnings in the early 90s, drum & bass’ rigid uniformity over the last decade has made it a stifling environment for many producers. For dBridge, with his background as a former member of the drum & bass heavyweight champions Bad Company, the pressure of dancefloor expectations and DJs’ desire for club smashers has been experienced and rejected once in his career already. Since going solo, he has been busy developing a more cultured sound, carving himself a free form niche in a music scene from which he was feeling increasingly distanced from. Instra:mental meanwhile, having had a successful stint in drum & bass some years earlier, returned to D&B production in the mid noughties with a uniquely fresh approach. Inspired by 80s synth music, the Detroit sound and the Warp back catalogue, and with a studio fully loaded with vintage hardware equipment, they set about writing drum & bass unlike anyone else; a method that struck a chord with a like-minded soul in dBridge.

“There was no space in drum & bass, it was just running twenty breaks on top of each other, so we thought about what we could do, because what we were making was quite minimalistic in some ways; we decided to not fill the gaps. The way we work is great, because if you have got someone else working with you, you can all grab a synthesizer and just make some noise and have a little jam session.” - Instra:mental.

“Hanging out with Instra:mental began to influence me; they were thinking outside of the box, not just a little… a lot. I was still sampling whereas they weren’t, one session I made a sound on the JP-8000 and I started to get it, be re-inspired for my job… for music.” - dBridge.

After a year in which Instra:mental collaborated with dBridge on the epic ‘Blush Response,’ they decided to form a creative alliance as Autonomic. As a result a club night, a podcast, an umbrella for their labels, and, most crucially, a style was born. The Autonomic sound is music first, drum & bass second. The people behind it are not setting out to make a drum & bass track; they are setting out simply to make music, producing compositions that are emotionally charged, personally edifying and organic. This is a million miles from the music-by-numbers churned out by so many of today’s producers; this is lovingly crafted with integrity, with vision and without the limitations of genre or style that so many artists impose on themselves.  And with the likes of Jimmy Edgar, Kyle Hall and Zomby lined up to release on Instra:mental’s NonPlus+ label in 2010, it’s fair to say that the trio are only just getting started.

“Eventually we want to go to any gig and have complete musical freedom. This is exactly what we are doing: any music, any style, and any tempo, as long as we like the music. - Instra:mental.
After a year of server-crashing Autonomic podcasts – that have shown an overwhelming thirst around the world for drum & bass that does not conform to any institutionalised boundaries - dBridge & Instra:mental have mixed FABRICLIVE 50 (note: the 100th addition to our compilation series). With a tracklist that boasts some of dubstep's leading lights working at a drum & bass tempo, FABRICLIVE 50 is a dreamlike collection of beat explorations and electronic soundscapes all lovingly woven into 70
minutes; a treasure of a disc that reveals more enriching details with each listen. Beautifully imaginative and colourful, enter the world of Autonomic, as they return drum & bass to the bleeding edge of electronic music.

“We wanted the fabric CD to be like the best podcast we’ve ever done. That was our aim. When we were asked to do it, we approached all the people making music we love, and asked them to write us something special for the CD. Distance, Scuba, Genotype, myself and Instra:mental all did it. It’s a great collection of music, harmonically it all works together; and as much as we have different styles, you’d be surprised what tunes stick together just from being in key. We wanted to showcase what it is that we’re doing, and what the sound is capable of.” – dBridge

Sublo releases on Shift.

Category: , , By brockolio

Wanna take the time to big up our Bassfaced bredren Sublo and give him some well deserved props for his two tunes 'My Ends' and 'The Coldest' releasing on Seattle's killer Shift. label

'Cold. Dark. Damp and gritty. All words used to describe the hometown of the Producers featured on the latest compilation from Shift. Spanning many different styles and flavors of Dubstep, one unique characteristic remains in all of the tunes on this album; much like the city they were spawned from- they all have a dirty edge to them that can catch you by suprise.

From the deep, chest-rattling sounds of Sublo's "My Endz" to Scott B's twisted, neuro-driven "Odyssey" to Dubtek's Gut-wrenching stomper "Glamorous Death Energy" and everything in-between- this Album is chalk full of Artists to keep an eye on in 2009.

Making his 2nd appearance on Shift is KJ Sawka, getting 2 more songs re-worked by the Mad Scientist that is Selfsimilar.(These are also featured on KJ Sawka's new album, "Undefined Connectivity: Remixed" dropping June 9th in conjunction with "Seattle Selections") Both tracks feature the amazing vocal talents of Christa Wells, another Seattle resident making waves in her corner of the map with her angelic voice and amazing stage presence.'

Seattle Selections will be available at Beatport.com, Digital-Tunes.net, Juno.co.uk, Chemical-records.co.uk and Addictech.com on June 9th, 2009

1. Sublo - "My Endz"
2. TZR & Press - "Nomad"

Lone: Naomixxx

Category: , , By brockolio

Here's a new mix from Lone, an up and coming producer from the UK whose jazzy and imaginative textures and beats often align him with the Flying Lotus/LuckyMe school of production, although making direct comparisons to his music is selling his originality short. Earlier this year, he released his acclaimed 17-track album 'Lemurian' which dropped on Dealmaker Records, which you can still support and purchase HERE.

here are what some have had to say about the album:

'Kaleidoscopic, shimmering hip-hop instrumentals from Lone that fill your ears with warm nostalgia and sails you away into a nebulae of opiated psychedelia. Superb, accomplished 17 track album for Dealmaker... Post-Dilla beats stumble amongst the emotive selection of samples - all lovingly selected and processed to provide a perfect seasonal soundtrack'' – Warpmart (Album of the Week)

“Lens Flare Lagoon conjures up the glistening, watery effect suggested by its name, and 'Buried Coral Banks' has a Boards Of Canada-meets-Jacques Cousteau feel that's hard not to love” – Boomkat (Album of the Week)

"This is totally cool, love the fuzzyness" - James Holden

"I like this stuff, his trick of slowing the samples is nice" - Alex Chase - Stones Throw

"This album is big!! Been hammering already!" - James Mountain – Ninja Tune

"Like Boards of Canada with an extra scoop of codeine and better drums...." - Rustie

"He has drunk from some of our Los Angeles waters" - Daedelus (Ninja Tune)

Keep a look out for Lone's newest EP releasing on Dealmaker Records entitled Cluster Dreams which you can preview now on his Myspace. For more info on Lone, check out his interview with 3barfire.

Sean from Dealmaker sent me over his freshest mix and I'm glad to be spreading it forth to the Bassfaced massiv. enjoy. out to Lone and Sean on this.

Matty G- Take You Back

Argon Records presents
Matty G - Take You Back
The debut album, featuring Juakali, Luv Fyah, Ugene and Audio Angel.

It's a peaceful, foggy night in Santa Cruz. Waves are crashing on the beach and Matty G is up late, working on his latest beat. Some of the most celebrated and beloved dubstep music has emerged from Matty G's Beach Hill studio in Santa Cruz, California. The story continues with his first album, built from a lifetime of diverse musical influences.

Matty G grew up playing the baritone saxophone (where his love of bass was found), while listening to hip hop, reggae and soul. He moved to Santa Cruz in 1998, where friends introduced him to DJ culture through house music, and later drum and bass. Unsatisfied with the direction music was taking, and tired of searching for records he could identify with, Matty switched to production to get the sounds in his head onto vinyl.

His early music consisted of bass-heavy hip hop beats with reggae and soul vibes. These proto-dubstep tunes were the foundation for his modern dubstep classics - Bitter Love, 50,000 Watts and West Coast Rocks. Take You Back spans the full spectrum of Matty G's style, taking the listener on a journey through musical history with tunes influenced by funk, soul, hip hop, reggae and lover's rock. Vocal and production collaborations with respected artists Juakali, Audio Angel, Luv Fyah and Ugene complement the theme by allowing Matty the opportunity to work with his friends.

Interrogating Martyn

Does Martyn play drum n bass? Techno? House? Dubstep? Or all of the above? Dave Rinehart investigates.

Hard one to pigeonhole, Martyn. When the Dutch producer plays at RA’s off-Sonar event in Barcelona this weekend, it'll be alongside techno acts such as Daniel Bell and Conforce. Last month at MUTEK he shared a bill with hip-hopper Flying Lotus and dubstepper Kode9. His last gig at Fabric was opening François K dub-centric Deep Space night.

"I've always collected all different styles of music, and I just love to play different styles of music out as well,” explains Martyn. "I always carry lots of dubstep, lots of house, even some hip-hop, some soundscapes, just anything really.”

That’s not to say that Martyn is one of those dreaded “eclectic” DJs who is all about mashing up the unexpected; it’s just that Martyn happens to make music at the nexus of different genres. For the past year or so, dubstep and techno have been eyeing each other from across the room, and Martyn’s bass-heavy, melancholy-tinged tunes such as 'Broken' and 'Twenty Four' have been among the first to consummate the relationship.

A DJ for a dozen years or more, Martyn’s first love was not dub and dubstep but rather drum n bass—his first records arrived on Marcus Intalex’s label Revolve:r in 2005. Lately he has started his own label, 3024, and released records on Appleblim’s new imprint Apple Pips. Future plans? Well, aside from getting married and moving to America, he’s intent on making a debut album, not to mention DJing every weekend. But since he carts round such a wide range of records to a wide range of gigs, surely he takes requests? "Well,” says Martyn. “My favorite gigs are the ones where they tell me, 'We just want Martyn. We don't care what you play, just do what you want to do."

MARTYN NEWS:

"Hi,

Two more recent remixes i've done are now available on Beatport, namely TRG's Broken Heart remix and Black Pocket (aka Steve Spacek) "Ure a Star" remix on Fat City Records (exclusive!). Click on my beatport player to get to them.

On a vinyl note, the Black Pocket remix should be out soon with a wicked remix by Harmonic 313 on the flip of Guilty Simpson's "For the D". Another remix "Epileptic" for Shut Up and Dance will drop this week, and my 3024-002 "Natural Selection / Vancouver" is out on july 7th! Revolve:r 012 with "After Seven" / "JW on a good night" and "Storm Watch" will be on the shelves end of july...

What will the future bring ??

- Just wrapped up 3024-003 to come out just after the summer. It will contain two wicked remixes by wicked artists!
- A couple more remixes coming, one of them is "Roberta Flack" by Flying Lotus on Warp.
- As I stated in an interview with ResidentAdvisor.net, I've started work on my first album.

comments always welcome!
stay strong all of you..

Rinse 04: Skepta

Category: , , , By brockolio

"Bumberclaart Badman!" rings the intro to "Rinse:04" and few would argue with Rinse's next artist up to bat, Joseph 'Skepta' Adenuga. Skepta is co-director of Boy Better Know alongside Big Dada artist Wiley, and brother JME. Skepta is one of the hottest names in the British Underground scene. Skepta's name alone on a flyer guarantees roadblock queues and a quick glance at his Myspace hits puts Lily Allen et al to shame. Skepta's 'Rolex Sweep' (both a tune and a dance move) is the follow up single to fellow Boy who Knows Better Wiley's hit 'Wearing My Rolex' (currently on Radio1 B Playlist / set to be a Top 5 single)

Skepta's mix is an audio documentary of what the demographic oft referred to as the `urban youth' are listening to now. Here you'll find dubstep, grime and house tunes mixed in the type of set you can expect to hear if you tune into the weekly Boy Better Know show on Rinse.

As the sound of the inner-city has developed, Rinse FM has been at the forefront time and time again with the rise of each scene. Pockets of the media attempt to pigeon-hole the station; a Jungle, Grime or Dubstep station etc. The truth is Rinse is THE pirate station: it will always represent the sound of the British Underground because the DJ's and Emcees on the station are the key players at its very heart

Category: , , By brockolio

Soul Jazz records will be repressing 500 copies of their two classic dubs that have been been almost impossible to find from Digital Mystikz since initial release. The two 12s being repressed are "Misty Winter/Conference" and "Walking With Jah/Earth A Run Red", the B side of which remains one of 2006's weightiest singles. Don't miss your chance to grab these records on vinyl while the opportunity lasts.
